Yeah…I took off for a while, and it’s going to take some time to get back into full-fledge writing reviews on bands/albums. So let me just do some mini one’s and get you all caught up to speed with what I’ve been listening to for the past few months.
The XX hit the scene a long time ago, and unfortunately, I’ve not had the time to finish my full review of their album. However, I’ve listened to them a ridiculous amount in since I got hold of them a while back. The entire album, listened straight through from beginning to end, is near perfection. I’m not sure how they’ll follow this up, but I can not wait for it. The sound is simple, but the tweaks here and there to make it their own create an immensely unique style, one which I could listen to forever.
Following their debut, DJ Wait What dropped a bomb on the internet mash-up industry with “The Notorious XX”. I was lucky enough to snag a copy of the mashed album before it was taken down (although I’m sure if you do enough searching, you can find it). Mashing legendary Notorious B.I.G. with the relaxing sounds of The XX is absurd, ridiculous, and brilliant. This might be one of my favorite mash-ups of all time. Again, another album I’ve been non-stop listening to these past few months.

If I could promote one band in this post, it would be Neon Trees. Their debut album Habits grabs you and doesn’t let go. They’re what the Killers lost, and what Ludo should have been. I heard their single “Animal” on the radio and prayed the rest of the album was just as amazing. My prayers were answered. I’m going to devote a post entirely to this band soon, they deserve the attention and a full album review. For now though, here are two of my favorite tracks.
B.o.B. put out a new album and it’s loaded with remixes and special guest appearances from Lupe Fiasco, Eminem, and even Paramore. If that’s not enough, plenty of the songs have hit mainstream hard, so it’s definitely something to check out! I’ve gotten my copy recently and only had a couple of chances to listen through the entire album in spots, but I will be replaying it more for sure!
B.o.B (ft. Bruno Mars)-Nothin’ On You
B.o.B (ft. Hayley Williams and Eminem)- Airplanes Part II
Minus the Bear is a band that travels middle of the road for me. They’re from Seattle, WA, which shouldn’t surprise you since they’re an indie band. I don’t love them, but I don’t hate them either. They’re on my list because, well, I can listen to their music and enjoy it, without really listening to their music. If that last sentence makes sense to you, then you might enjoy Minus the Bear as well. I will say this, what I don’t like about their music is made up in their song names: “Thanks For The Killer Game Of Crisco® Twister”, “Monkey!!! Knife!!! Fight!!!”, “Hey, Wanna Throw Up? Get Me Naked”, and EPs names like Bands Like It When You Yell “Yar!” at Them just to name a few. I guess I still haven’t made up my mind, but I do thoroughly enjoy the guitar-tapping and sonic sounds. They’ll stay on my album list until I can come to solid conclusion on where they stand in my book. Here’s a sample from their newest album Omni which I like, let me know what you think of them in the comments.
Minus the Bear-My Time
Here’s a list of songs, in no particular order, that have caught my ear lately.
Eminem is coming back, and it looks to be big. His latest still holds my opinion that he has the best flow of any rapper I’ve heard to date.
Eminem- Despicable (freestyle)
The Gorillaz have a new album out. It’s a bit far-fetched for me, but there is one song I just can’t get out of my head:
The Dirty Heads hit the scene with new Sublime singer Rome Ramirez in their single “Lay Me Down”

Jay-Z just knows how to do it. Enough Said. And no, this is not cut off in the beginning.
Jay-Z (ft. Mr. Hudson)-Young Forever
Never heard of her until driving at night listening to Big Sonic Chill. She’s covering a great song, and has a great sweet, loungy-jazz voice.
Skye-Feel Good Inc (Gorillaz Cover)
Shiny Toy Guns
Saw them in concert recently. Not impressed, but they do have a good cover out which they did well live.
Shiny Toy Guns-Major Tom (Coming Home) (Peter Schilling Cover)
Yeah, I know these last two are from car commercials. I don’t care, they’re catchy. And for the record, I posted about Pomplamoose well before they were in the Toyota commercials….
Sia-Under the Milky Way (The Church Cover)
